Defined by God’s Design

When God changes our lives, we yield completely to His calling in our lives.

Last summer I began reading a book entitled, “Defined” by Stephen and Alex Kendrick with Lawrence Kimbrough, which was about living a life of purpose/meaning, value, and love and being who God created you to be and that “what God thinks of you and can do through you is much more incredible than you think.”

Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” God was talking to Jeremiah who prophesied in the kingdom of Judah as Jerusalem is being destroyed and God’s people are being carried away into Babylon because of their sin. It is a time of judgment and of suffering for all the people and for Jeremiah personally. But Jeremiah also cites God’s promise of restoration. Sin has its consequences but also that through Jesus, our mediator, God’s last word is about forgiveness and eternal life. (NIV)

How many of us have quoted Jeremiah 1:5 during times of indecision, changes going on in our lives, and whenever we have sinned against God? But God knew us before we were born and set us apart and appointed us to be a light in this darkened world. Each of us were created in His image to live a meaningful life, but we need to discover who we were created to be.

Before a construction worker begins a job, he has to make sure he has the right tools in order to get the job done right. After looking at his blueprints, he then begins to tear down an old building or whatever his task may be before he creates something new.

This past week, our home has been undergoing some demolition in two bathrooms. There has been a lot of tearing out of the old vanities, light fixtures, a tub, and old tiles that were cracked in order to create better bathroom spaces. The process of the renovations is supposed to take two weeks, but somehow after the project began the general contractor discovered some issues that needed to be taken care of first before he could resume his original plan. Programs on HGTV showcase these types of projects.

God has a plan for us as well but oftentimes we deviate from what God created us to be by straying off the path to “do our own thing” until we realize something is not quite right and God has to steer us back onto the right path again.

As Christians we need to have the right mind-set and believe that “with God all things are possible” and that He knew us before we did. He already has a plan laid out for each and every one of us to follow. We just need to continue to seek Him for His direction. Life happens and things happen along the way, but we need to continue to keep our eyes on Him.

We are therefore not defined by what others think of us but we are “defined by God’s great design” for us so that we can live a life full of purpose/meaning, value, and love. May you continue to seek His will and follow His calling for your life–not the life someone else says you are to have. He is our potter and we are the clay to be molded in His image.

Secret Things Uncovered

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.” Deuteronomy 29:29

Several years ago Rhonda Byrne wrote “The Secret”, followed by “The Power” and “The Magic.” Her intent was to impart “the secret” to millions of readers so that they could believe it’s principles, learn them, and use them to gain whatever they “attracted” from the universe. After all, “you are what you think”, right?

Dr. Henry Cloud then came out with a book, “The Secret Things of God”, written to “unlock the treasures reserved for everyone” but found in the Word of God. Although his book was not intended as a “Christian argument for or against “The Secret”, he pointed out that her book affirmed “the deep spiritual hunger” that a number of Christian’s were seeking but could not find. His intent was for Christians to go to the Word of God and seek out God’s commands for every day living and to listen to them.

When I was a child, oftentimes when my friends wanted to get my attention, they would ask, “Do you want to know a secret?” and would whisper something in my ear. We would end up giggling over what this secret entailed. Adults tend to play this game by whispering something in their friend’s ears from time to time.

Growing up in the 60’s and as a star-struck teenager, I often listened to music by the Beatles, a popular boy band, who wrote a song entitled, “Do You Want To Know A Secret”, which was a love song. The one thing you had to do was “listen to the secret and promise not to tell.”

As a Christian, I am often reminded of how Satan tries to whisper in our ears by making a lot of promises in order to get us to do something contrary to our very own Christian principles. A perfect example is how he tried to tempt Jesus in the wilderness but Jesus knew the scriptural teachings and did not succumb to the many promises Satan enticed him with.

Let’s take a look at some of the “secret” scriptures in God’s Word in order to understand it’s definition. (NIV translation)

  • Job 15:8: “Do you listen in on God’s council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?”
  • Psalm 25:14: “The Lord confides in those who fear Him; He makes His covenant known to them.”
  • Psalm 27:5: “For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of His tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.”
  • Psalm 25:21: “My integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope is in you.”
  • Matthew 6:6: “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Another song that I really enjoy singing is “In The Secret…I want to know you. I want to hear your voice…I want to know you more.” Shouldn’t this be the desire of every Christian–to truly know God and to hear and listen to His voice no matter what is happening in our lives.

Psalm 18:30 tells us that “As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in Him.” This is a reminder that God will be with us no matter what circumstances we come up against in our lives. He is our strength and shield.

Psalm 18:2-3: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise and I am saved from my enemies.”

Let us all seek out the teachings in God’s Word with an attitude of gratitude and being thankful for all that you receive from God whether great or small, good or bad. He is our refuge, our strength, and shield in whom we trust. This is a “secret” uncovered by untold millions who listen to His voice, His teachings, and His direction and drown out the wrong whispers.

May the Lord strengthen you as you read His Word and continue to follow Him daily.

Blessings,

Yvonne

Things You Will Never Regret

A smile does not cost anything!

Recently, while scrolling down my news feed on FB, I came across a friend’s post who shared “Things You’ll Never Regret” by Peaceful Moments for Women. As I read through the list, I decided to look up scripture verses that would give us better insight into the things on this list.

Praying: I Thessalonians 5:16-18–“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Regardless of what is going on in our lives and the circumstances of our surroundings, we are told to “continually pray.” God hears and answers.

Putting Your Phone On Down: Psalm 19:14–“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Phones keep our minds on earthly things and keep us from talking with one another. Keep the communication open with friends and family by listening. Put your phone on mute so you can enjoy a wonderful conversation face to face.

Listening Over Talking: Proverbs 19:200–“Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.” It is so important to listen to one another. We can learn so much.

Visiting Grandma: Leviticus 19:32–“Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.” We should show respect for the elderly by being there for them.

Reading the Bible: Joshua 1:8–“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” The Word of God clearly teaches us how to live and guides us on our journey.

Kindness on Social Media: Galatians:5:22-26–“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying one another.” A lesson to show kindness to everyone we come in contact with.

Investing in Memories Over Things: Matthew 6:19:21–“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Invest in your family, friends, and neighbors; not in the things of this world.

Not Gossiping: Proverbs 20:19–“A gossip betrays a confidence; if you wage war, obtain guidance.” Gossiping leads to hurtful feelings and loss of trust.

Thankfulness Over Comparison: I Thessalonians5:18–“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” In all things, we need to be thankful.

Buying Lemonade at the Stand: Although I wasn’t able to find a scripture verse, I believe this implies that if we buy from a child’s lemonade stand, it will encourage them to succeed. Positive attitude.

Taking the Higher Road: Romans 12:21–“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Let us take the high road to avoid any evil thoughts and replace them with good.

Catching Fireflies with Your Kids: Proverbs 22:6–“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Be a good role model for your children; show them God’s love by just being available when they need you and teaching them valuable lessons along the way.

Forgiving Others: Mark 11:25–“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in Heaven may forgive you your sins.” It is so important that we learn the importance of forgiveness; not only to forgive others, but to forgive ourselves. If we don’t forgive, then how can God forgive us.

Forgiving Yourself: Mark 11:25 (above). If we don’t forgive ourselves, we can harbor anger, resentment, and we can actually become sick.

Doing that Scary Thing: Isaiah 41:10–“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” If the Lord is with us, there is no fear.

Giving the Compliment: John 3:16–“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son; that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Selflessness. We give a compliment as an act of love without wanting anything in return. Love.

Drinking More Water: John 4:14–“But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” We know the importance of drinking more water so that we do not hydrate; however, Jesus talks about a “spring of water” which is the Spirit operating in our lives.

Saying I Love You: John 13:34-35–“A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” When we love one another, it is easy to tell them that we love them. God commands that we do so.

Trusting God: Proverbs 3:5-6–“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understandings; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” If we trust God, he will provide for our every need and protect us along the way.

There are a number of scriptures that I could have chosen. My prayer is that you take each one on the list and begin searching for scriptures that would apply to your own life/situation and to your relationship with God.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Blessings,

Yvonne

Friendspiration: Word of God on Friendship

The Word of God is filled with verses pertaining to friendship(s). These scripture verses are insights and wisdom of instruction regarding finding and keeping friendships as well as how to live our lives on a daily basis according to Christ’s teachings. I will not be covering every scripture but want to share just a few of them with you.

Proverbs 13:20 indicates that “He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.” This tells us that it is important to choose our friends wisely and to keep the right company. I Corinthians 15:33 further states that “Do not be misled: bad company corrupts good character.”

Other scriptures such as Proverbs 17:17 tells us that “a friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” No matter what is going on in our lives, a true friend will love us and help us through our adversity.

Encouragement, commitment, love, and support are the qualities of a true friend. Someone who encourages us in the faith and helps guide us along the way to make a strong commitment in that faith through their love and support is a friend worth seeking.

Galatians 5:13 says we are to “serve one another” and Ephesians 5:21 says that we are to “submit to one another.” Serving each other is a way of expressing God’s love and being helpful to another person’s spiritual, emotional or physical welfare.

Guidance from the scriptures help us understand how we are to interact with one another and are commandments for us to follow in our everyday lives. How to live with each other; how to treat each other; how to seek out wisdom and guidance for direction and purpose as we follow Christ’s teachings.

In conclusion, I Peter 4:8-10 says, “…love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.” Now that is “true friendship” shown to others through the faith that we live out each day.

May the Lord help us to share our lives with others and live out our faith each and every day in the way that Jesus taught us through his promises.

Blessings,

Yvonne
